She wrote into a car-help advice author. What was the guy supposed to do. Give legal advice? Psychological advice? Really now.. Talk about potential law suits..

Actually, he gave her the best possible advice that could be given by anyone. He, being a simple man, did not include a reasoning as to why he addressed the one issue and not the other. Really, what could he tell her about her relationship that wasn’t already obvious? Her husband is cheating on her with a hot 19 year old, won’t go to marriage counseling; the relationship is pretty much over and in much need of someone in it to say so. If she loves him and wants to stay and work it out, that makes her an idiot and is only going to serve to sadden her more in the long run.
Honestly, the only advice that would be worth giving and not obvious would be the mechanical advice. It helps her fix her vehicle and get it running so she can attend to the more practical things: Work; getting paid; transportation of all personal belongings to somewhere else.
Alright, I notice two things wrong with this:
First of all, you’re a woman degrading a man by thinking he was only replying to the one issue because he was shallow-minded and obviously didn’t see anything wrong it. He might have been doing just that for just that reason, but you don’t know because you weren’t inside his mind. Stop stereotyping.
Secondly, a lot of men are not good with emotions or emotional problems. To expect many men to actually give relationship advice beyond the usual ‘man code’ is asking a bit much. They’re afraid of it.
He may have just responded with the advice he could give at the time. Perhaps he had been through much the same thing and had been hurt a lot by it and had no real advice to give on that. Or perhaps, he knew that the best way to get over something like that is to keep your mind occupied on other things, more important matters. I know it sounds bad to deem it as unimportant, but bad relationships are a dime a dozen. People cheat on their spouses daily; both men and women. It happens more often that two people sticking together for their entire lives. The only thing it really affects are the people involved and their feelings.
The biggest problem with giving advice of that nature is that there is never a right answer.
The right answer changes from person to person and the only person who can supply the right answer is the person asking the question.
I think it’s very sexist of you to go through and stereotype men like that. Sure, in a lot of instances, you would be right, but there is no way you could possibly know what went through his head as he wrote that. Sure, he could have said that she should dump him and move on with her life, but what if they stick together and manage to work things out because they truly love each other? The guy doing the cheating may not have wanted to go to counseling for the matter, but it still could have struck a cord within him. We don’t know, and more importantly, the Advice guy didn’t know.
Sadly, most successful Advice Columnists are those who think they know everything, but really don’t know anything. Should be commending him for commenting on the one part that actually required advice.

Yeah, the lady wrote into an auto advice column, so what did she expect?! But on the other hand John probably gets a lot of letters that he could have responded to instead. I know she said it was urgent, but that response was as good as no response at all and that in itself is pretty embarrassing.

The first time I saw this, the advice was from a woman. Someone obviously thought it was not believable for a woman to write this and changed it to a man. We all have to set aside our prejudices. Of course, it isn’t a real article, it is a spoof. Still, there is no reason to believe that a man is more likely to write this than a woman. Not only is there a stereotype that women hate mechanical things, there is a stereotype that men are simple-minded. How can we move on from these silly things?
