Wow… The only reason they mix the breeds is to genetically “fix” Whats wrong with the breeds separately… I know alot of people love golden retrievers but cant deal with the hair because of allergies, so the poodle part of the genetics fixes that… Breeders that breed animals to be show quality frequently are continuing the genetic problems found with breeding dogs that are related (aka incest). Don’t be so quick to jump on people who call themselves breeders just because they breed 2 types of dogs… Don’t be so close minded

All dogs have dander, all dogs have the ability to trigger allergies, some are just reduced. These “doodle” mutts only have a 30% chance to carry the reduced allergen gene, so that leaves 70% that are mutts with no specific purpose. Also, reputable breeders do not breed incestuous dogs. Backyard breeders and puppy mills, the ones producing these doodles, are more likely to be perpetuators of incest, dogs that are not genetically tested for health problems, and general poor care.
You take a dog that isn’t tested and breed it with another breed who is not tested, you still have genetic problems, you just don’t have a contract to get a refund.

I own a labradoodle and due to this i am aware of the breeding circumstances. I guess unaware to you a large amount of the mutts that you speak of are actually now considered their own breed as they are generational and most do not come from the puppy mills that you claim but true honest to goodness breeders. What you are insinuating is insulting and those dogs with no specific purpose do not just go to waste but are loved and cared for by a family that wants a sweet, energetic, adorable, kind and loving dog.

Yeah? well, I cross breeds all the time! I am in a quest to create the world’s ugliest puppy! One time, I crossed a Labrador with a wire-coat terrier and got a lab coat which is the perfect dog for scientists. Another time, I crossed a beagle and a basset hound and got a bagel, which is a Jewish dog that goes real good with lox. But my ultimate achievement was crossing a shitzu and a bulldog. I got the perfect dog for used car salesmen and politicians–the bull shitz.

I loathe the perpetuation of purebreds as the only respected dogs, and you’re contributing to it. The fact is that mutts are genetically superior in most cases, and they are often much more unique, with unpredictable dynamic personalities and levels of intelligence that most purebreds (except the border collie) just simply can’t reach. Let people call their mutt-breeds whatever they want. “Cockapoo” is a relatively accepted name for the cocker spaniel/poodle mix these days.
I agree that backyard breeders are bad news in most cases, since there are plenty of perfectly good purebred dogs and mutts that are in animal shelters around the world waiting to be adopted. It’s especially bad here in Taiwan, but in a country with so many beautiful homeless mutts on the streets and in animal shelters, I feel a little sick when I see a Taiwanese with a purebred.

I have owned several purebreds and I have owned several mixed breeds. Most of the mixed breeds happened by “accident” not by intentianal breeding two different breeds. I loved all my dogs as all have been a source of great companionship and joy. I have to say without a doubt, couple that have given me the MOST joy have been mixed breeds, for whatever reason.
Prior to reading this, I was under the impression that it wold be impossible to cross breed a jack-ASS and a donut HOLE. Apparently I was wrong.

are you like on crack? they are a breed. It is called a designer dog. I had a yorkiepoo which is a yorkie poodle mix and i got it from a pet store and paid a lot of money for it .. so dont tell anyone that it is not a breed and that reputable breeders or whatever dont have them, because actually they do so get your facts straight.

Christine, I think by ‘not a real breed’ people are referring to the fact that they are not registered as being a real breed by the AKC or any other official entity, meaning you couldn’t enter them in a dog show, or register them with the American Kennel Club for breeding purposes.
Basically, because they are a mix, there is no such thing as a ‘purebred’ Yorkipoo or other cross-breed.

If we get lucky, the kennel clubs will leave them alone for a very long time. That way the breeds can be developed without those morons interfering and making things all about looks.
Are they full blown breeds now? No, but several generations have been born and many of these modern designs are starting to breed true. The experience and knowledge of long time respectable breeders has gone into the mix on quite a number of occasions and these are not the domain of puppy mills but genuine efforts to establish new breeds. It will take more work, but we are seeing the birth of new breeds and they already have breed names. Once they can completely breed true, whether or not those insipid kennel clubs recognize them or not, they are a breed.

Are you serious right now? If you buy a dog from a pet store, there is a good chance it came from a puppy mill. Good job being ignorant and spending “a lot of money” to perpetuate an abusive and inhumane institution. You get your facts straight.

Two words: Rhodesian Ridgeback. Bred into being using at least 4 different other breeds. It is considered a breed, but it was definitely a “designer” breed because it was designed for hunting lions. Additionally, most of the breeds we see today are 200 years old or less and many more are less than 400 years old.
All breeds were designed by man for a specific purpose. It is the kennel club snobs that say there are no new breeds, just fads. Many of the designer breeds are gaining in popularity and population that they can now be bred true, that is, with others of their design. Also, many of the designer dogs are bred by professional and reputable breeders with decades of experience. This is the process of creating a new breed. Eventually they might be common enough that the idiot kennel clubs have to let them in, but I hope not. Kennel clubs like the AKC destroy breeds because they favor looks over any other factor, including genetic health. The UKC is at least a bit better, but even there the dog shows aren’t open to “mutts” and they get a lower level of membership.
What makes me angrier than hell is the idea that a “pure breed” is the only good kind of dog. A good dog is one that is healthy, friendly, and happy. Nothing else matters. I’m a deep lover of shih tzus, but that doesn’t mean I also don’t love the German shepherd / Alaskan husky cross I grew up with. It is really sick that you can’t look at a video of a puppy playing and just enjoy the cuteness of it. Instead, you have to rant and rave like a lunatic snob programmed by the kennel clubs to be against anything they don’t recognize. Breeds go extinct and new breeds are yet to be developed, and the idiot kennel clubs will fight them all the way.

Katie and Lyndsay…you’re stupid, ignorant people. How do you think we got the “purebred” dogs we have today??? People crossbred the different breeds at the time. You wouldn’t have the “purebred’s” you speak of if it wasn’t for those “incestuous dogs”. And those classifications are just a facade.

Noya you are the idiot here. Yes to create the purebreds, breeders first had to find to breeds that had the desired traits. After that the breed was continuously bred to weed out the unwanted traits and leave the dog with the desired traits. This is where the incest of the dogs comes from. The “purebreds”, to keep their traits, are only bred with the same “purebred”. This causes the all of the problems for the purebred dogs. As they cannot combine traits with other breeds they continue having the problems that nature never intended for them (no this is not a God discussion either, bleh). Dogs were meant to interbreed just as every other animal in nature is supposed to. No matter what species if you stay in the same bloodline or breed, whatever you want to call it, there will be significant problems. There is more than the reason that incest is considered disgusting that it is illegal. It causes severe problems down the generations and is extremely unhealthy. All of these poor purebreds must suffer their entire lives so someone can have a “pure” pet. Don’t presume to tell others what you obviously do not know. YOU ARE AN IDIOT. Buy a mutt. they are still beautiful dogs that will love you as long as you love them.
